Mesh EditMode Material Assign
by Mika Saari

This is the screen you should see when Blender is executed.

Now zoom on a little bit the screen so you can see the
whole plane even in the EditMode. This zooming can be done
using either

1. CTRL + Middle Mouse Button + Mouse movement
2. Using KeyPad "+" and "-" buttons

Now start editing the plane a little bit.

First go to EditMode using "TAB" button.

Now you should see plane with four magenta vertices.

Select two most right vertices.
1. Move mouse cursor near lower right vertice
2. Press right mouse button
3. Move mouse cursor near upper right vertice
4. Press Shift down from keyboard and same time
press right mouse button again

Now extrude these two vertices by pressing e button
from keyboard (called EKEY in blender manual). When
Blender asks "OK ?" push "Extrude" menu button, which
is just under mouse pointer, using left mouse button.
Press CTRL button down from keyboard and move mouse so
much right that you get image like my screen. After you
are satisfied press left mouse button.

Edit plane a little bit more and make exactly same for
left vertices as you did for right most vertices.

First select left most vertices and extrude them and
you will get screen like me.

After object looks satifying select Material button from
icon list (The Red Ball), and you will get much great
buttons and colors.

There are R,G,B (Red, Green and Blue) scroll bars in
the material window. Move scroller of G and B as left
you can by moving mouse on the scroller and pushing
left mouse button down and moving the mouse left.
Another way is to move mouse cursor on the G or B number
and pressing Shift button down and pressing left mouse
button same time, now you are allowed to write the value
to scroller button (0.0 in this case). Move R value as
right as possible (value 1.0).

Now it is time to add another Material to your work.

This is done by selecting that little button just left
from "MA: Material" text. Press that button down and
select "ADD NEW" button.

The new material will be copy of the material which was
opened when you created the new one.

To make the color to be yellow move Green (G) scroll bar
to right or set value to 1.0.

After this select the Red material from the list to
be active material. Push the same button which was
used to make new material and select "Material" button
from list.

Go back to the EditMode window by pressing square icon
just next to the globe icon.

Now make new material to the object by pressing
the new button, below the "1 Mat: 1" text, using left
mouse button.

After this there should be text "2 Mat: 2" on the screen,
with red square next to it.

The Object Material "2 Mat: 1" is Red also, because when
you press new button the same material will be used
for new material as the active one. So we have to select
some other material for "2 Mat: 2".

First you have to change to Material window again by pressing
the Material icon (Red Ball).

Then you can select "Material.001" by pressing
that little material button and selecting "Material.001"
from the list.

That "0" sign before "Material.001" text means that
this material is not used in this work in any object yet.

And when you change back to the EditMode Window, by
pressing the square icon next to the globe icon, you
can see that the "2 Mat: 2" material color has been
changed to yellow.

Now select middle vertices using by moving mouse first
to e.g. upper middle left vertice and select it using
right mouse button. Now press shift button down from
keyboard and keep button pressed until you have selected
all four middle vertices. Vertice selection will be done
using right mouse button (while pressing shift).

After selection press "Assign" button.

Now just press TAB key to exit from EditMode.

And after this press z button from keyboard (ZKEY) and
you should see image like here.
