This is a Tutorial on how to use The Gimp to make a face texture to use in the GameBlender
engine.
I've assumed that you've successfully downloaded the program and
installed it. First we need to open a new image. Go to File
--> New and you will get a popup menue like this:
Next, fill the space with your choice of flesh color using the paint
bucket. Double click on the color shown in the bottom left
corner:
find the color you like in this window
Then dump the bucket (click) inside the empty image:
Now you will start the first of many layers. Layers are important
because, if you make a mistake, you can use the erraser to clean it up without
effecting anything else. This picture is from a little farther along, but
it's basicly the same thing. Right click anywhere inside the image and
select Layers, then select Layers, Channels & Paths. You
will then get a popup menue like below left. Click the lower left "new
page" button and you get the second popup menue to the right. It should by
default come up as the same size as the original image, and if it's not default,
make sure that "Transparent" is selected.
You will then have two layers showing in the left window (here it only
shows the background layer, the new layer will now show up above it. Make
sure it is selected, so that the changes you now make, are on that
layer
Next, we're going to start the lips. Choose a lip color you like,
then select the "Lasso" tool:
make a shape you think looks like half a lip, something like
this:
and fill it with the color you chose.
Next we need to copy this image (keep it selected) by right clicking on
the image, select Edit --> Copy then left click anywhere on the image
to deselect the original, and right click again on the image, this time
selecting Edit --> Paste Into
Now don't deselect it. First we have to flip it (mirror it)
We do that by right clicking on the image in the middle of the newly
pasted lip piece and selecting Tools --> Transform Tools --> Flip
or you can use the toolbar and select this icon
then a popup menue will
ask, horizontal of vertical, you want horizontal right now:
Then all you do is click inside the highlighted lip and it should mirror
itself.
Ok, so it looks wierd right now, just chose your favorite paint tool, I
used an airbrush, and fill in the missing pcs. I did it this way to keep
it as symetrical as possible. That always looks better.
Now we need to give the lips the illusion of 3d. We do this by
first highlighting the lower half with the lasso tool
Choose a darker color and "hide" your paint brush behind the
dotted line so you get a crisp line that blurs downward. you can also add
dark dots, and highlights from a light source. We then give the lips some
motion blur. Right click on the bottom lip, choose Filters --> Blur
--> Motion Blur...
You will then get a popup like this:
Change the angle to 90
Hit OK, and we will now do the upper lip. First we must "invert
selection". This is done by right clicking on the image and going to
Select --> Invert Now everything BUT the bottom lip is
selected.
So again, hide your airbrush behind the selection line and spray
into the upper lip like so:
Ok, I forgot to highlight the lower half, I just went back and
added some highlights later.
Now we have lips, so we need to work our way up. I first merge
visible layers because, for now, the lips are done. I do this by right
clicking the image, choosing layers, --> Merge Visible Layers
Now we create a new layer by clicking on the "new page" looking
button, don't forget!!!
I started sketching out my nose, etc with a slightly darker color from
the base "skin tone". First, I select my skin tone color again by using
the dropper tool
and clicking on the skin area of the picture. Next, I double click
on the color that pops up (or is in the tool pallet) and choose to look at it
with the triangle:
This way you can choose different hues of the same color. Then I
adjust the size of my airbrush to my liking and lower the transparency, so I can
sketch lightly, without making hard lines:
experiment, see what you like. Sketch out what you can like below,
include some highlights, give it several tones, then blur them by right
clicking the image, go to Filters --> Blur --> Blur and just leave the
default settings, or experiment with them.
Then we'll start the eyes:
Use the selection Lasso
again and make an eye shape. Next fill that eye up with a
white, but not too white, color:
Then zoom in on that eye, and don't freak out, it's ugly!
